Maria de Incluso” or “Recluso,” mentioned in numerous abbey documents as early as the 11th century. Although some documents are of dubious authenticity, the link with Banzi is confirmed by papal and royal bulls in subsequent centuries, which sanctioned its possession by the monks.

Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the sanctuary saw the establishment of a small community of Carmelites, as evidenced by its dedication to “Santa Maria del Carmine” found in 18th-century documents. However, by 1729 the community had died out and the sanctuary was united with the parish of Montemilone.

The Legend of the Miraculous Discovery

The devotion to Our Lady of the Gloriosa is linked to a beautiful legend that speaks of faith and a divine sign. It is said that, before fleeing, the monks hid a statue of the Virgin in a niche carved into the rock. The statue was found centuries later by two herdsmen, one from Montemilone and the other from Minervino Murge. Each wanted to take the sacred effigy to his own town. To resolve the dispute, they decided to entrust themselves to the will of the Madonna, placing the statue on a cart pulled by oxen left free to choose the path. The oxen, reaching the crossroads, did not take either road but, miraculously, returned to the exact spot of the discovery. It was there, in that place chosen by the Virgin herself, that the faithful decided to build the sanctuary.

Architecture and Artworks

The sanctuary we admire today is a jewel of medieval religious architecture. Its plan with three apsidal naves, set on pillars, reproduces on a smaller scale the layout of the majestic abbey church of Banzi, linking it to the Benedictine Cassinese-Campanian sphere. The dating of the structure is likely to be placed between the end of the 11th and the first half of the 12th century, with an inscription (now lost) that perhaps attested to its foundation in 1103.

The façade, sober and elegant, features a portal with a lowered arch and a beautiful octagonal rose window. Inside, a fascinating discovery awaits the more attentive visitors: at a lower level, incorporated into the foundations, lies the ancient cave carved into the sandstone that was probably the first nucleus of worship. The church has undergone modifications over time: the façade and the bell gable date back to the 18th century, while the roofs and vaults have been rebuilt in recent times.

The Treasure of the Sanctuary: The Statue of the Virgin

The heart of the devotion is the miraculous wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. The work, of refined craftsmanship, dates from a period between the end of the 13th and the mid-14th century and is a beautiful example of late medieval Lucanian artistic culture.

The Virgin is depicted seated on a throne, with the Child on her left leg. Jesus, with a gentle and solemn gesture, blesses with his right hand and with his left holds a scroll bearing the inscription: “Ego sum lux mundi” (“I am the light of the world”). The Madonna, wrapped in a blue tunic, raises her right hand, which originally held a globe. The garments, painted red with golden borders, and the throne decorated with pommels and small arches, give the whole a majestic sacredness.

Traditions, Ex-Votos, and Popular Devotion

The history of the sanctuary is also the history of the simple and grateful faith of its devotees. Once, the interior walls were covered with a touching collection of ex-votos, tangible testimony of graces received through the intercession of the Madonna. A letter from 1937 paints a vivid picture: frescoes covered by “straw-stuffed trousers, shoes of war veterans, paintings and small pictures, children’s blouses and shorts… All ex-votos.” In addition to these objects of popular devotion, the faithful have also always donated precious goldsmith works. Unfortunately, this collection is now dispersed, but the memory of that lived faith remains an integral part of the place.
