Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocchetta: Between Faith, History, and Breathtaking Views
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocchetta, strategically located in Airuno, Lecco, is a place of deep spirituality rooted in a millennial past. This sanctuary is not only an important center of Marian devotion but also a treasure trove of Baroque art and a privileged vantage point over the surrounding landscape.
A Journey Through History
The origins of the site date back to ancient times. Before the current sanctuary, a 10th-century church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel stood on the nearby rock, evidence of Lombard presence in the area. Traces of this oratory blend with the history of the rock, once a defensive outpost. Between the 1200s and 1300s, in this place of spirituality and strategic importance, the presence of a small church dedicated to the Virgin Mary is documented, the original nucleus of the current sanctuary. Over the centuries, the sanctuary has undergone various transformations, evidenced by its different dedications: in the mid-16th century, it appears as “Santa Maria del Castello della Rocchetta,” and towards the end of the same century as “Santa Maria della Pace.”

Architecture and Art: A Baroque Treasure
The original building, likely in Romanesque style, has undergone significant modifications over time. The gable facade is partly concealed by the Baroque curvilinear pediment, which adds an elegant touch to the exterior. The facade features a central portal with a rectilinear entablature, surmounted by a window with a decorative pediment.
The interior of the sanctuary is a triumph of Baroque decorations, with three bays, the last of which is larger. The ancient cross vaults were modified to accommodate pictorial decorations. Elegant Baroque windows open on the southern side. The apse has a polygonal shape.
To the right of the church is a small courtyard with a well, in Baroque style, while to the left, a loggia offers a breathtaking view of the Lecco area. The arches of the loggia rest on seven tapered 17th-century columns. The wooden ceiling is from a later period. Of particular interest is the fresco depicting Mary with the dead Christ on her lap, dating from the period between 1600 and 1700.

The Holy Stairs and the Chapels: A Path of Devotion
A distinctive element of the sanctuary is the Holy Stairs, consisting of one hundred and thirty steps, built between 1923 and 1924. Climbing the Holy Stairs is an act of penance and devotion, a physical and spiritual path leading to the sanctuary. On the ascent towards the rock, there are seven chapels, each dedicated to a mystery of Christ’s Passion, inviting reflection and prayer.
Treasures of Faith: The Ex-Votos
The sanctuary houses a collection of ex-votos, various objects offered by the faithful as a sign of gratitude for received graces. These objects, kept in a room between the sacristy and the church, testify to the popular faith and devotion towards Our Lady of Sorrows. The ex-votos are a precious testimony to the history of the sanctuary and its importance in the life of the local community.
