The Statue of the Archangel Michael: A Celestial Warrior

The interior of the sanctuary, divided into three wide naves, holds a treasure of inestimable value: the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel. These events are carefully documented in the Archive of the Stabia Chapter, tangible evidence of the deep popular devotion. A particularly significant document dates back to June 13, 1558, when some refugees from Sorrento and Massa, fleeing Turkish invasions, took refuge on Faito and witnessed the miracle.

Historical Roots: From the Chronicle of the Anonymous Sorrentine to Reconstruction

The origins of the sanctuary are rooted in a distant past. The first mention of the sanctuary is found in the 9th-century Chronicle of the Anonymous Sorrentine, which recounts that mass was celebrated daily in the church and that numerous pilgrims went there to implore favors or give thanks for graces received. However, the sanctuary’s history has been marked by difficult times. In 1818, a devastating fire reduced it to ruins, causing a period of decline. The statue of the Saint, damaged by lightning, was restored and transferred to the cathedral of Castellammare in 1862. Subsequently, the sanctuary area was infested by brigands, causing a further drop in the number of pilgrims and leading to the complete abandonment of the church between 1862 and 1865. Fortunately, in the first half of the 20th century, Bishop Federico Emanuel promoted a committee for the reconstruction of the sanctuary, culminating in the consecration of the new temple in 1950.

Saint Catello and Saint Antonino: The Archangel’s Apparition

Devotion to Mount Faito is closely linked to the figures of Saint Catello and Saint Antonino. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to the two hermit saints, who had withdrawn to the mountain in prayer, asking them to build a church in his honor on that site. This episode, narrated in the Chronicle of the Anonymous Sorrentine, testifies to the sacred vocation of the mountain and its importance in the history of local faith.

Diocesan Disputes: A Chapter of Ecclesiastical History

Over the centuries, the sanctuary has been at the center of jurisdictional disputes between the dioceses of Stabia and Lettere. In the 13th century, a dispute arose concerning the city of Pimonte, the closest to Mount Aureo, which fell within the diocese of Lettere. The issue was resolved in favor of the diocese of Stabia. The controversy flared up again in 1580, when Pope Gregory XIII entrusted the bishop of Lettere with the task of investing the cleric responsible for the church. This decision led the bishop of Lettere to claim jurisdiction over the church. However, once again, the decision was in favor of the bishop of Stabia, as attested by a notarial deed from 1589, which confirms the church’s belonging to the territory and diocese of Castellammare di Stabia.

A Spiritual and Naturalistic Adventure

Beyond its spiritual and historical value, the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel offers the opportunity to experience nature firsthand. Mount Faito, with its panoramic trails and lush vegetation, invites adventurous explorations.
