Arrested in Bergamo for their faith, they suffered atrocious tortures and were finally beheaded on August 9th around 304 AD. The first evidence of the church’s existence dates back to 1363, as attested by a will from October 21st of that year. In this document, Fino, son of the late Odorico da Baldeniga, bequeathed two pounds of oil to illuminate the church dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico. This ancient bequest testifies to the deep-rooted popular devotion to the saints and the presence of a well-established place of worship already in the 14th century.

During the 17th century, the church underwent several restorations, without however altering its original structure. These conservative interventions testify to the importance attributed to the sanctuary over the centuries and the desire to preserve its integrity for future generations.

The sanctuary houses precious relics of Saints Fermo and Rustico, including a bone from an arm and another fragment, preserved in a carved and gilded wooden wall reliquary. Next to the relics, an image of Saint Fermo was an object of great veneration by the faithful.

In addition to the relics of Saints Fermo and Rustico, the sanctuary also preserves bone fragments of other saints, including Juliana, Barbara, Anastasius, George, Pope Pius V, and Saint Charles Borromeo, together with a fragment of the Cross and a piece of the veil of the Virgin Mary.
