Here, in 1290, a monastery was built, solemnly consecrated on June 3, 1291, in the presence of as many as 16 bishops, in addition to the diocesan bishop. The original medieval church, unfortunately now destroyed, was an example of Gothic architecture with three naves, divided by stone columns. Inside, above the main altar, stood a magnificent painting depicting Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Sylvester, surrounded by other sacred figures. This description, recorded by S. Cambio in 1903, offers a glimpse of the artistic and devotional richness that characterized the sanctuary in past centuries.

A period of abandonment began in 1527 and lasted until 1741, when the site was occasionally used as a hermitage. After the earthquake of 1741, Don Alessandro Rosa rebuilt the structure, dedicating it to Saint Bartholomew, to whom it is still named today.
