San Daniele di Monte Sanctuary: A Journey Among Faith, History, and Nature

Nestled in the breathtaking scenery of the Friulian Dolomites, in the heart of Barcis (PN), stood the Sanctuary of San Daniele di Monte, a place steeped in history, faith, and spirituality. Although now in ruins, the remains of this ancient sacred site continue to attract pilgrims and enthusiasts of local history, offering a unique experience of discovery and reflection.

The History of the Sanctuary: From Origins to Decline

The origins of the Sanctuary of San Daniele di Monte are lost in the mists of time, likely dating back to around 1240. Its construction, perhaps accompanied by a hospice for pilgrims, made it an important landmark for travelers and faithful traversing these rugged mountains.

The sanctuary was consecrated in 1319 by the Bishop of Concordia, Artico di Castello. A crucial event was the union, in 1327, of the churches of Barcis and the monastery of San Daniele di Monte with the Sacristy of the Cathedral of Concordia, again by Bishop Artico. In 1391, the Patriarch of Aquileia, Giovanni, granted 40 days of indulgence to all who visited the church or contributed to its maintenance, a tangible sign of the importance attributed to the sanctuary.

Despite its venerable history, the sanctuary was repeatedly struck by calamitous events. A fire in 1681 almost completely destroyed the church, sparing only the perimeter walls. It was rebuilt in 1689, but misfortune struck again when lightning burned it to the ground once more on July 14, 1806. Since then, the sanctuary was never rebuilt, leaving behind the ruins we can admire today.

Prophet Daniel: The Patron Saint of the Sanctuary

The sanctuary was dedicated to the Prophet Daniel, a biblical figure of great moral and spiritual stature. Daniel, who lived in the 6th century BC, is venerated by both Jews and Christians for his wisdom, his unwavering faith, and his ability to interpret dreams and visions. His story, narrated in the biblical book bearing his name, is rich in miraculous episodes and precious teachings about justice, prayer, and faithfulness to God.

An Experience of Adventure and Spirituality

Visiting the Sanctuary of San Daniele di Monte is not only an immersion in history and faith but also an opportunity to experience adventure and discovery in pristine nature. The trail leading to the sanctuary, immersed in the woods, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Barcis.

Adventure and search: It is said that during restoration work in the 1600s, sacred objects and ancient documents were found. Local legends speak of a treasure hidden near the sanctuary, perhaps concealed to protect it during invasions or raids. Although there is no concrete evidence of this, the mere idea of discovering a hidden fragment of history adds an element of mystery and fascination to the experience.

A Glimpse into the Past: The Testimony of Daniel Paron

A precious testimony of the sanctuary’s past comes from Daniel Paron, a worker for the Count of Barcis, who wrote in 1682: “A small church was found built under the name and title of St. Daniel, distant from the village and parish of Barcis, three miles, in a mountainous place and difficult to climb, to which on the day of its feast a numerous crowd gathered, even from neighboring places…”. These words give us the image of a living and frequented place of worship, a point of reference for local communities.

Even though the sanctuary is in ruins, it is possible to reach the site and admire the remains of the ancient structure. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes and bring water and food, especially if planning a longer hike. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during spring or summer when temperatures are mild and the landscape is more lush.
