  • Sanctuary of San Domenico: Faith, History, and Mystery in the Heart of Bologna

Church of Santa Maria e San Domenico della Mascarella

The Sanctuary of San Domenico, officially the Church of Santa Maria e San Domenico della Mascarella, stands in Bologna as a beacon of spirituality and a treasure trove of history. Its facade, overlooking Via Mascarella, and its side on Via Irnerio, with a suggestive arcaded portico, invite pilgrims and visitors to enter a place where faith and art intertwine.

    A Journey Through the Centuries

The current building is a reconstruction from the post-World War II period, necessary due to the bombings that destroyed the ancient 18th-century church. But its roots sink into a much more remote past, precisely in the 12th century, when it was founded by the canons of Roncesvalles. This place later became the first Bolognese and Italian seat for the nascent community of San Domenico di Guzman, a key figure in the history of the Catholic Church and founder of the Order of Preachers.

San Domenico: A Saint, an Order, a Lasting Influence

San Domenico, born in Caleruega, Spain around 1170, was a tireless preacher and a man of deep faith. His work in Bologna marked the beginning of an extraordinary expansion of the Dominican Order, which distinguished itself through its activities of preaching, study, and defense of the orthodox faith. His tomb, located within the Basilica of San Domenico (not in this sanctuary, but in another church in Bologna), is an important pilgrimage site.

The church, rebuilt in a historicist and rationalist style, features sober interiors with plastered walls and exposed brick cornices. The flat ceiling helps create an atmosphere of recollection and prayer.

The Link with Roncesvalles and the Parish Origins

Modern studies suggest that the foundation stone of the church dates back to the Augustinian canons of Roncesvalles, who arrived in Bologna from Spain in the 12th century. These canons were dedicated to welcoming pilgrims at the nearby church of Santa Maria della Mascarella and offered assistance and shelter. Despite its location outside the city’s second circle of walls, the church was granted the title of parish. Bolognese chronicles mention the church as a peripheral parish as early as 1187. Documents from 1269 and 1271 attest to the role of the canons and the Chapter of Bologna Cathedral in appointing the Rector of Santa Maria della Mascarella.

    Treasures and Mysteries to Discover

Although the Sanctuary of San Domenico in the Mascarella does not house the remains of the Saint (preserved in the Basilica of San Domenico), it is a place rich in history and spirituality. Exploring the building and its surroundings, one can discover traces of the past and deepen knowledge of the life of San Domenico and the Dominican Order. It is said that in some hidden corners of the sanctuary, one can still perceive the vibrations of the prayer and dedication of the first preaching friars.

Ideas for an Adventurous (Spiritual) Search

    • The parish archive: might contain unpublished documents on the history of the church and the local community.
    • The artworks: deepen knowledge of the artists who contributed to the decoration of the sanctuary and the meaning of their works.
    • The surroundings of the sanctuary: explore the adjacent streets, searching for historical buildings and testimonies of Bologna’s past.

Visiting the Sanctuary of San Domenico is an opportunity to combine faith with discovery, to admire art and architecture, and to immerse oneself in the history of Bologna and the Dominican Order.

In 1219, the preaching friars obtained from the Bishop of Bologna the Church of San Nicolò delle Vigne.
