The History of the Sanctuary: A Journey Through Time

The history of the San Liberato Sanctuary has its roots in the 18th century. In 1780, Pope Pius VI granted the relics of Saint Liberato Martyr to Duchess Anna Pignatelli. These sacred remains arrived in Roccamandolfi the same year and were provisionally placed in the parish church of San Giacomo. Devotion to the saint grew rapidly, so much so that in 1830 the church was granted the title of Sanctuary.

A significant moment in the sanctuary’s history was the first centenary, celebrated in June 1880. On that occasion, the bishop placed a gold crown and a silver palm inside the urn, symbols of royalty and martyrdom. In 1902, the relics were transferred from the old urn to a new and precious silver urn.

In 1933, the main altar was raised and the urn containing the relics was placed at the center of the presbytery, on a marble throne crafted by artists from Pietrasanta. This arrangement, still visible today, gives the sanctuary an aura of solemnity and sacredness.

Saint Liberato Martyr: Life and Martyrdom

The figure of Saint Liberato Martyr is shrouded in mystery. Information about his life is scarce and fragmented. However, popular tradition venerates him as a young Roman soldier converted to Christianity and martyred for his faith during the persecutions of the 3rd century AD.

His story, albeit legendary, embodies the values of courage, faith, and perseverance, making him an example for the faithful of all times.

The Sanctuary’s Architecture: An Artistic Treasure

The San Liberato Sanctuary features a simple yet elegant structure. The church consists of a single nave, illuminated by light filtering through the side windows. On the right side, four chapels open up, while on the left side is the baptismal font.

The most imposing element is the main altar, located in the apse space created in 1896. Behind the altar rises the marble mausoleum that houses the saint’s relics. Inside, an urn contains the saint’s bones, a cloth, and some blood.

In the crypt below, numerous ex-votos are preserved, testifying to the gratitude of the faithful for graces received. Among these, one can admire goldsmith works and various objects, offered as a sign of devotion.

These testimonies, kept in the sanctuary’s archives, constitute a precious historical and spiritual source.
