Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Strada: Faith, History, and Mystery at the Foot of Mount Etna

Nestled in the evocative Etna landscape, in Giarre, stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Strada, a place of profound spirituality and rich history. A Sanctuary Between History and Devotion

The origins of the Sanctuary are lost in the mists of time, intertwined with the events of the Norman conquest of Sicily. Legend has it that around 1080-81, Count Roger, returning from the conquest of Taormina, was heading towards Mascali along the ancient military road at the foot of Mount Etna. In this area, he fell into an ambush by Saracens. Invoking the help of the Virgin Mary, he promised to build a sanctuary in her honor if he were saved. Miraculously escaping the ambush, Roger kept his promise, initiating the construction of the sanctuary’s first core.

The original structure, in Siculo-Norman style, underwent significant transformations over the centuries. In the 18th century, the church was enlarged and embellished, taking on a neoclassical appearance with Baroque elements that still characterize it today. The intervention of Cav. Continella Patanè in 1908, out of received grace, further enriched the temple with stuccoes, precious marbles, elaborate decorations, and the addition of four marble altars besides the main one dedicated to the Virgin.

A Treasure of Art and Spirituality

Inside the Sanctuary, visitors can admire four side altars and as many chapels, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Francis of Paola, and the Crucifix. Every corner of the sanctuary exudes faith and art, offering a profound spiritual experience.

The heart of the sanctuary is the precious canvas depicting the Virgin with the Child and Saint John the Baptist. Likely from the school of Antonello da Messina, this artwork has recently been restored, bringing back to light its original beauty and expressive intensity. The dating of the work is placed between 1400 and 1499, testifying to the sanctuary’s rich history.

The sanctuary is a place of veneration for several saints, including:
