This miraculous event gave rise to the cult of Santa Maria in Petriolo and the construction of the primitive chapel, later replaced by the current sanctuary.

The walls of the sanctuary are adorned with numerous ex-votos, painted tablets, and goldsmith objects, offered by the faithful as a sign of gratitude for graces received.
