Unfortunately, the precious collection of painted tablets that once covered the walls of the staircase to the cave is now dispersed, but the goldsmith objects that are placed on the statue during festivities are still preserved.

The sanctuary is a living place, rich in centuries-old traditions:

• **The Feast of August 2nd**: This is the solemn day, heir to the ancient 1495 fair, with the solemn **procession** of the Madonna’s dressed statue.

• **Indulgences**: The sanctuary enjoys special spiritual privileges. In addition to the **Plenary Indulgence of the Porziuncola** (August 1-2), granted in 1469, it is possible to obtain a plenary indulgence on August 15th (Assumption) and on the third Friday of Lent.

• **The Marian Beacon**: A fascinating curiosity: until 1842, every night a large fire was lit on the hill to guide sailors to the port of Bari. In memory of this tradition, in 1950 a **lighthouse** was erected which still today symbolizes Mary as the “star of the sea” for the faithful.

• **Blessed Giacomo**: Tradition holds that Blessed Giacomo da Bitetto stayed here, building seven huts in memory of the Roman basilicas. Until 1855, his “miraculous staff” was preserved.
