As a divine sign, the event occurred, and a church was built on the spot by cutting down an oak tree at the point of the apparition. From the severed stump, water miraculously gushed forth, which still feeds the fountains below the church today.

Over the centuries, the sanctuary underwent several transformations. In 1907, a new church was built, oriented opposite the previous one and connected to it via the sacristy. The new structure, with its simple and austere architecture, features a single nave and a trussed roof. The presbytery is delimited by a balustrade, which in 1948 replaced the original wooden one.

The Miraculous Fresco: Madonna della Misericordia among Saints

The heart of the sanctuary is the late 15th-century fresco depicting the Madonna della Misericordia between Saints Rocco and Sebastian. Above the sacred figures, the title “Salus Infirmorum,” health of the sick, hope of the suffering, can be read. The Madonna is venerated precisely for this intercession on behalf of the sick and the needy. Until 1910, the fresco adorned the back wall of the old sanctuary, above the only altar.

Born in Montpellier, France, in the 14th century, he dedicated his life to caring for plague victims, contracting the disease himself and miraculously recovering. In 1585, the Franciscan friars of the convent of Santa Maria Apparuta in Graffignano requested the Bishop of Bagnoregio to be invested with the benefice of the church. The request was presented by Brother Cornelio, guardian of the convent. The Franciscans managed the church until 1652, when Pope Innocent X ordered its closure, entrusting the sanctuary to a chaplain who was to assist the parish priest in the care of souls. Subsequently, the sanctuary returned under the jurisdiction of the diocesan bishop.
