Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocca: Faith, History, and Adventure in the Heart of Veneto

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocca, located in Cornuda (TV), is a place of profound spirituality, rich in history and legends, nestled within a picturesque landscape. A sanctuary that has withstood wars, destruction, and reconstructions, keeping the faith of its devotees alive and offering a unique experience to all who visit.

The Legend of the Apparition and the Origins of the Sanctuary

The history of the sanctuary is rooted in a fascinating legend. It is said that in 1096, a crusader returning from the Holy Land brought with him a young oak sapling, which was planted on the hill of Cornuda. In the 12th century, a young mute girl had a miraculous vision: the Madonna appeared to her on a branch of this oak tree, restoring her speech and entrusting her with the mission of having a sanctuary built on that sacred site. Initially, a church was erected halfway up the hill, but its walls inexplicably collapsed. Through a new miracle, the girl convinced the inhabitants of the divine will, and so the church was built on the summit of the hill.

A Place of Devotion and Tumultuous History

From its origins, the sanctuary became an important center of Marian devotion. Its strategic position, overlooking the Piave Valley, also made it the stage for significant historical events. Over the centuries, the sanctuary suffered several destructions and reconstructions, bearing witness to the events that have marked the territory.

    • 16th Century: During the Turkish invasions of 1566, the sanctuary was particularly venerated as a refuge and protection against the impending danger.
    • 1848: After the Battle of Cornuda and the defeat of the Italian troops against the Habsburg army, the sanctuary was devastated and stripped of its precious objects.
    • Great War (1915-1918): The hill on which the sanctuary stands was on the front line during the First World War, and the building was reduced to rubble. Reconstruction took place between 1920 and 1922, restoring the sanctuary to its former glory.

Despite the difficulties, faith and devotion never waned. The local community tenaciously committed to rebuilding the sanctuary each time, preserving the memory of the place and its spiritual importance.

Art and Architecture: A Sanctuary That Tells Its Story

The current appearance of the sanctuary is the result of various reconstructions and modifications made over the centuries. The facade, originally with columns, has been replaced by pillars supporting a pediment. Inside, one can admire a statue of the Madonna, reminiscent of the image of the apparition on the oak tree.

Although many of the ex-votos and testimonies of faith from past centuries have been lost due to the destructions, some recent ex-votos are preserved in the side sacristy, evidence of the continued devotion of the faithful.

Visiting the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rocca is not only a religious experience but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the history and culture of the region. The surroundings of the sanctuary offer the chance to go on hikes and walks to discover the natural beauties of Veneto.
