Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Sassella: A Jewel of Faith and History in Valtellina
Nestled in the heart of Valtellina, in Castione Andevenno, stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Sassella, a place steeped in history, faith, and Marian devotion. For centuries, this sanctuary has been a spiritual landmark for the people of Sondrio and for pilgrims arriving from everywhere, drawn by its beauty and the profound spirituality that permeates it.

An Ambitious Project: The Unfinished Sacred Mountain
At the beginning of the 1700s, the love and devotion of the people of Sondrio for the sanctuary manifested in an ambitious project: the creation of a Sacred Mountain, modeled on those already present in Lombardy. The idea was to build fifteen chapels along the path leading to the sanctuary, each dedicated to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary. Unfortunately, only six chapels were completed, two of which were adorned with splendid wooden statues carved by Giovan Battista Zotti. The project was then abandoned due to the enormous costs incurred for the expansion of the collegiate church of Sondrio and because of a disastrous flood of the Mallero river. Despite its incompleteness, the existing chapels testify to the grandeur of the original project and invite reflection and prayer.
Legendary Origins: An Apparition and a Miracle
The history of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Sassella is shrouded in an aura of legend. According to a memoir by Luigi Casati, rector of the sanctuary between 1791 and 1807, the origin of the church is linked to a Marian apparition that occurred in the distant year 932. The Virgin Mary, appearing to the archpriest of Sondrio, lamented the scarcity of places of worship dedicated to her in the area and wished for a church to be built in the Sassella locality. The archpriest, obedient to the Madonna’s will, began construction work on the plain near the Adda river. However, even before the foundations were laid, the building materials were miraculously transported to the nearby hill, indicated by the Virgin Mary herself. In a subsequent apparition, the Madonna confirmed that the chosen site for the construction of the sanctuary was precisely where the materials had been found.
Historical Roots: The Capitanei of Sondrio and Jurisdictional Control
The first historical testimony of the sanctuary dates back to 1320, when the church was founded by the Capitanei of Sondrio, a powerful Guelph family, vassals of the Bishop of Como and lords of the parishes of Sondrio and Berbanno. In 1482, the sanctuary was annexed to the Hospital of Sant’Antonio in Sondrio, which was also under the patronage of the Capitanei. Jurisdiction over the church was contested over the centuries. The first record (1476) refers to the right of the archpriest of Sondrio to celebrate mass there on the day dedicated to the Annunciation. However, it cannot be ruled out that the parish had jurisdiction over the institution since its foundation. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the spiritual care of the church was entrusted to a chaplain chosen by the patrons and confirmed by the archpriest of Sondrio. From 1482, the chaplain of Sassella also had the task of governing the Hospital of Sant’Antonio in Sondrio.
