Santa Maria della Vetrana Sanctuary: A Journey through Faith, History, and Art in Castellana Grotte

Nestled in the heart of Apulia, in Castellana Grotte, stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Vetrana, a place of profound spirituality and guardian of centuries of history. This sanctuary is not only a landmark for Marian devotion but also a treasure trove of art and popular traditions, offering visitors a unique experience that intertwines faith, culture, and discovery.

A Bit of History: From Origins to the Present Sanctuary

The origins of the church dedicated to Vetrana are lost in time. Documents attest to its existence as early as 1303, as evidenced by the will of Leone d’Epifania. However, the hypothesis identifying it with the church of Santa Maria di Castellano, mentioned as far back as 1074, remains a subject of debate among historians.

Over the centuries, the sanctuary underwent several transformations. A crucial moment was in 1712, when the church was expanded and the adjoining convent was built, giving it the appearance we admire today.

In 1750, the Madonna della Vetrana was proclaimed the patron saint of Castellana, an act that sealed the deep bond between the local community and the Virgin.

The post-unification period saw the suppression of the convent in 1866, following government laws. Fortunately, in 1931, the complex was reassigned to the Observant Friars Minor, ensuring the continuity of its spiritual mission.

The patronage of the benefice of Santa Maria della Vetrana, under the title of the Assumption, was founded by Count Adriano Acquaviva d’Aragona, with the commitment to celebrate 52 annual masses and provide oil for the votive lamp. In 1738, the benefice was limited to the Assumption chapel only.

Architecture and Art: A Treasure to Discover

The current church features a Latin cross plan, topped by a dome resting on a high drum, located at the intersection of the transept and the single nave, covered by a barrel vault and enriched with side chapels.

The façade, with its gable profile and pinnacles at the base of the slopes, is partially concealed by the convent building. The only portal is framed by a Baroque pediment housing the statue of the Virgin with the Child enthroned, bearing on the architrave the inscription: *SUB UMBRA ALARUM TUARUM PROTEGE NOS*.

The Miraculous Fresco: Heart of Devotion

The beating heart of the sanctuary is the 15th-century fresco depicting the Virgin and Child, following the Byzantine iconography of the Hodighitria. The Mother, crowned by two angels holding censers, with her head adorned by a nimbus and wrapped in a blue maphorion, points to the Son with her right hand. The Child, also with a cruciform nimbus, is portrayed in a blessing gesture and holds in his left hand the open Gospel, on which is written: *EGO SUM LUX MUNDI*.

This fresco, initially located in the presbytery area, was moved to the main altar after 1710, becoming the focal point of popular veneration.

The Processional Statue: A Papier-Mâché Work of Art

The processional statue made of papier-mâché, crafted in Lecce in 1850, is another significant element of the sanctuary’s artistic heritage. During festivities, the statue is carried in procession through the streets of Castellana, accompanied by songs and prayers, renewing the centuries-old bond between the community and its patron saint.
