Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rio Sacro: A Place of Devotion and History

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rio Sacro, located near Meriggio in the Marche region, is a place rich in history, spirituality, and charm. Though marked by the passage of time and seismic events, this sanctuary continues to bear witness to the deep faith of local communities and attracts visitors seeking peace and spirituality.

History and Origins of the Sanctuary

The history of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rio Sacro dates back to the Middle Ages. Its origins are linked to the ancient Benedictine monastery of San Salvatore, founded in a mountainous and rugged location. The nearby stream was called “sacro” (sacred) in reference to the church built there and the wooden Crucifix housed inside, an object of great veneration.

A significant moment in the sanctuary’s history is the papal bull “Quoties a nobis” of May 11, 1192, through which the Pope confirmed to Pietro, the Benedictine abbot of San Salvatore di Rio Sacro, the civil and religious jurisdiction of the monastery over the populations of Bolognola and Acquacanina. This document attests to the importance the monastery held in the region at the time.

In 1330, due to the isolated and inconvenient location of the original monastery, the monks decided to abandon it and founded the church of Meriggio, transferring the furnishings and artworks from the San Salvatore convent, including the revered wooden Crucifix.

    Treasures of Faith and Art

The sanctuary housed important works of art, testaments to the devotion and cultural richness of the place. Among these was a sculpture depicting the Crucified Savior, likely dating back to before the 11th century. Unfortunately, this precious artwork was stolen in 1975, leaving a void in the hearts of the faithful.

Image of the Statue of the Madonna and Child

Another treasure of the sanctuary is the polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, a remarkable work from the 15th century, likely of Abruzzese origin. This statue is a significant example of sacred art from that era and continues to be an object of veneration for the faithful. Its presence evokes an atmosphere of sweetness and maternal protection, inviting prayer and contemplation.

A Place of Exploration and Spiritual Adventure

Beyond its religious and artistic value, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rio Sacro also offers intriguing opportunities for an “adventurous” exploration. History and trekking enthusiasts can explore the surroundings of the sanctuary in search of the remains of the ancient Benedictine monastery of San Salvatore. The rugged and isolated location of the original site adds an element of mystery and challenge to the exploration.

It is said that near the sanctuary, traces of ancient paths used by the monks to travel and connect the monastery to other settlements still exist. Rediscovering and walking these paths can be a fascinating experience, allowing one to immerse themselves in the history and spirituality of the place.

Additionally, the surrounding nature offers breathtaking landscapes and beautiful natural trails. Exploring the woods and mountains around the sanctuary can be an opportunity to reconnect with nature and find a moment of peace and reflection.

The Sanctuary Today: Challenges and Hopes

Currently, the church is closed due to earthquake damage. This situation has inevitably created a sense of loss and concern in the local community, which has been deprived of an important place of worship and gathering.

However, faith and hope remain alive. The community is actively working to secure the necessary funds for the reconstruction and restoration of the sanctuary. The goal is to restore the church to its former glory and reopen it for worship and devotion.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rio Sacro represents an important historical, artistic, and religious heritage for the entire region. Its revival is a crucial objective to preserve the memory of the past and ensure a future of faith and spirituality for generations to come.

In recent times, spiritual care was entrusted to the parish priest.
