A Sanctuary with Ancient Roots
The history of the Sanctuary dates back to the distant 6th century when a first church was built on this site. The structure we admire today is the result of a reconstruction in the 16th century, maintaining a simple yet elegant design with a single nave and a gabled roof with wooden trusses. Over the centuries, the Sanctuary underwent several modifications, particularly in the last decade of the 20th century.
Devotion to Sant’Anatolia
The central element of the Sanctuary is undoubtedly the devotion to Sant’Anatolia, a Christian martyr whose story is shrouded in mystery and faith. According to tradition, Anatolia was a Roman noblewoman who suffered martyrdom for her Christian faith. The Sanctuary preserves the memory of her sacrifice and invites the faithful to reflect on the value of faith and Christian witness.
Inside the Sanctuary, on the left wall, visitors can admire a remarkable polychrome stucco statue from 1566 depicting Sant’Anatolia. The Saint, in a solemn pose, wears a dark red robe with floral motifs and a golden mantle. In her right hand, she holds the palm of martyrdom, symbolizing her victory over death, and in her left hand, a serpent, representing the defeated evil. A dagger, visible above her right breast, recalls her martyrdom. The radiant halo encircling her head emphasizes her sanctity.
The Hermitage and the Miraculous Well
Adjacent to the Sanctuary is a hermitage, a place of retreat and prayer that attests to the profound spirituality of the site. Inside the hermitage lies a well tied to local folklore. It is said that Sant’Anatolia was thrown into this well on her father’s orders due to her Christian faith. The well is considered miraculous, and its water is believed to bring blessings and healing.
The Legend of the Translation of the Relics
The history of the Sanctuary is enriched by a captivating legend that tells of the translation of the relics of Sant’Anatolia and Sant’Audace. In 932, Abbot Leo III of Subiaco, inspired by a divine vision, traveled to Tora in search of the martyrs’ remains. After an unsuccessful search, the exact location of the relics was revealed to him in a dream. The bodies were loaded onto a wild horse, which miraculously became docile. During the journey, near Gerano, the horse stopped and refused to continue toward Subiaco. The abbot interpreted this as a divine sign and decided to build a church there in honor of Sant’Anatolia. The procession then resumed its journey to Santa Scolastica, where the relics were laid to rest, and the horse died.
