After initial negotiations with the community of Varazze in 1615, the land was purchased on February 22, 1616. Construction began at record speed on March 18 of the same year, with the laying of the cornerstone on April 6. By the end of August 1616, the church and three hermitages were already completed, a testament to the dedication and fervent devotion of the Carmelites. The official inauguration took place on July 16, 1618.

The Miraculous Crucifix

A central element in the Sanctuary’s history is the 17th-century ivory Crucifix. Tradition holds that this crucifix, which fell into unfaithful hands and was desecrated, shed tears of blood. It was later redeemed by the Carmelite Michelangelo di Gesù, who brought it to the Desert of Varazze, where it was enshrined in a specially built chapel.

Historical Events and the Return of the Carmelites

The Sanctuary’s history has been marked by periods of confiscation and abandonment. In 1799, following the historical events of the time, it was confiscated and sold to private owners. The Carmelites repurchased it in 1818, but in 1855, it was confiscated again, with the friars expelled in 1858. After returning to private hands once more, it was definitively repurchased by the Carmelites in 1920. This event marked the beginning of a new phase for the Sanctuary, with the abandonment of the hermitic tradition and the establishment of the aspirants’ college (transferred from Genoa to Varazze-city in 1922 and active until 1978). In 1978, the novices found their place at the Desert, and the Carmelites actively dedicated themselves to the care of young people and the management of the Sanctuary.
