Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Olevano Romano, in the province of Rome, stands the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Annunciation, a place of deep spirituality and rich history. This sanctuary, a destination for centuries-old pilgrimages, houses artistic treasures and captivating narratives, making it an essential stop for those seeking to combine faith, art, and discovery.

A History Steeped in Miracles and Devotion

The history of the Sanctuary is tied to a miraculous event: the apparition of the Virgin to a young shepherdess in the Colle di Maggio area. According to tradition, the Madonna appeared from a tuff stone, offering the girl a rose that miraculously bloomed from a thorn bush in the middle of winter. This miracle convinced the townspeople and the parish priest to build a chapel near the stone, marking the beginning of Marian devotion in this area.

The Miraculous Fresco and the Patron Saints

Inside the sanctuary, visitors can admire a fresco by an unknown artist, likely dating back to the 15th century, depicting the Madonna and Child. This sacred image is considered the heart of the sanctuary and is deeply venerated by the faithful. In addition to the Annunciation Virgin, the community of Olevano Romano venerates Saint Margaret, the town’s patron saint.

    Ex-Votos: Testimonies of Received Grace

The sanctuary houses a precious collection of ex-votos, votive offerings donated by the faithful as a sign of gratitude for received graces. Among these, visitors can admire heart-shaped plaques, a small chain, and other goldsmith objects. A portion of the ex-votos is kept in the storeroom of the parish church of Saint Margaret, awaiting relocation to the sanctuary after the 1983 restoration work. These objects represent a touching testimony of faith and popular devotion.

A Journey of Faith Through the Centuries

The origins of Marian devotion in Olevano Romano date back to the 14th or 15th century, when worship was centered in the small church of Colle di Maggio (now Sant’Anna). Due to the precarious condition of the structure, the church was abandoned. A plaque inside the current sanctuary recalls how Reverend Don Domenico Piselli Pizzuti transformed the ancient chapel into a church dedicated to the Virgin of the Most Holy Annunciation. The De Santis family donated the land on which the current sanctuary stands, located in a more accessible position compared to the town. Initially known as the “church of the De Santis threshing floor,” the sanctuary took the name “Church of the Most Holy Annunciation” after the transfer of the image of the Madonna of Colle di Maggio on March 25, 1639. The feast of the Madonna is celebrated every year on March 25, coinciding with the solemnity of the Annunciation.
