Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Salzano: the Donkeys that Knelt before the Viaticum

In the Venetian countryside crossed by the river Muson, the town of Salzano commemorates a simple and touching prodigy of 1517: grazing animals which, upon meeting the priest walking with the Blessed Sacrament, bent their knees in adoration and escorted the Viaticum to the house of a dying man.

The Viaticum in the Night

In 1517 a priest of Salzano was urgently called to bring the Viaticum to a sick man in danger of death. The season and the hour were unsuited to a solemn procession, so the priest had to make do with a single altar boy and set off hurriedly across the meadows bordering the Muson.

When they reached the fields, some donkeys that were grazing moved towards the little convoy: and, coming up to the priest, they bent their knees before the Blessed Sacrament. They then followed the Viaticum to the sick man’s house, renewing their genuflection, and accompanied the priest on his way back before returning to their pasture. The humble beasts had recognised what so many men struggled to believe.

The Altar Cloth of Remembrance

In memory of the prodigy, the cathedral of San Bartolomeo preserves a precious altar cloth linked to the tradition of the miracle, kept and venerated by the community of Salzano. The cathedral, rebuilt in the nineteenth century in elegant neoclassical forms, counts among its most illustrious parish priests a future pope: Giuseppe Sarto, later Saint Pius X, who was parish priest in Salzano from 1867 to 1875.

Salzano between Faith and History

The link with Saint Pius X — who certainly knew and cherished the memory of the miracle — adds fascination to the story: the town preserves the rectory of the holy parish priest and a living religious tradition, together with the historic spinning mill that tells of nineteenth-century Venetian labour.
