Santa Maria della Sanità Sanctuary: Faith, History, and Mystery in the Heart of Milan

Nestled within the vibrant urban fabric of Milan, the Santa Maria della Sanità Sanctuary stands as an oasis of peace and spirituality, a place where faith intertwines with history and art. Built upon the remains of an ancient church, this sanctuary continues to be a point of reference for the faithful and a hidden treasure for those seeking beauty and knowledge.

    A Sanctuary with Ancient Roots

The history of the Sanctuary has its roots in the distant year of 1639, when a small church dedicated to Health was erected to invoke divine protection in times of hardship. Unfortunately, detailed descriptions of that primitive construction have not reached us, leaving room for imagination and the search for hidden traces.

In 1694, the Camillian Fathers, known for their dedication to caring for the sick, took charge of the sacred place. Understanding the importance of a larger and more welcoming sanctuary, they decided to demolish the old chapel and construct a new building, giving rise to the current Santa Maria della Sanità Sanctuary.

Architecture and Art: A Harmony of Faith and Beauty

The curvilinear façade, a typical example of Baroque style, welcomes visitors with its unfinished elegance, inviting them to cross the threshold and discover the wonders kept within. The interior, with an oval floor plan, extends harmoniously into the apse, creating an intimate and evocative space, ideal for prayer and reflection.

Four side chapels, two on the right and two on the left, enrich the environment with works of art and testimonies of faith. Among these, the statue of the Madonna of the Rosary with the Child stands out, located immediately after the entrance on the right. An image of great devotional value, it invites the faithful to recite the Rosary and meditate on the mysteries of the lives of Christ and Mary.

The Camillians: Guardians of Faith and Charity

Next to the Sanctuary, the Camillian Fathers erected, between 1729 and 1737, a convent designed by Giovan Battista Castiglioni. This architectural complex, besides providing accommodation for the religious, became a driving center for charitable activities and assistance to the sick, in line with the charism of the order founded by Saint Camillus de Lellis.

Saint Camillus de Lellis, a giant of charity, dedicated his life to serving the sick, revolutionizing hospital care and promoting the dignity of patients. His figure, as well as that of his followers, is a shining example of Christian love and dedication to others. The presence of the Camillians at Santa Maria della Sanità has left an indelible mark on the history of the sanctuary and the local community.

A Sanctuary Rich in History and Devotion

Although the chronology of the ex-votos kept in the sanctuary is not available, their presence testifies to the deep devotion of the faithful towards the Madonna della Sanità. Tablets and plaques with inscriptions, once placed in the first chapel on the right, near the statue of the Madonna with Child, represent a tangible sign of gratitude for graces received and healings obtained.

Adventure in History: Although the precise chronology of the ex-votos has been lost, some testimonies can still be admired inside the sanctuary. Observing these objects carefully, trying to decipher the stories they conceal, can turn into an adventure into history and popular faith.

Beyond the ex-votos, the sanctuary might hold other hidden treasures, such as ancient documents, sacred objects, or valuable works of art. Politely asking the sanctuary staff if it is possible to access the archive or other spaces not usually open to the public might reveal unexpected surprises.
