Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Canosio: the Blessed Sacrament that Halted the Flood of the Maira

At over a thousand metres of altitude, in the upper Maira Valley in the province of Cuneo, the small Alpine village of Canosio preserves the memory of a prodigy bound up with the power of nature and the faith of a parish priest. It was 1630 when the flood of the swollen, menacing Maira torrent was about to sweep the village away: it was then that the Blessed Sacrament, raised in blessing, stopped the waters.

Don Antonio Reinardi and the Blessing over the Waters

The protagonist of the miracle was the parish priest of Canosio, Don Antonio Reinardi, a man of great Eucharistic piety. Facing the fury of the torrent that threatened to destroy the village houses, he gathered the faithful and, monstrance in hand, blessed the flood with the Blessed Sacrament. The waters receded and the village was saved. Tradition records that many of those who witnessed the prodigy were converted.

A Feast that Has Endured for Four Centuries

Since then the community of Canosio has never ceased to give thanks: every year, in the octave of Corpus Christi, the villagers celebrate a solemn feast in honour of the prodigy, with a Eucharistic procession retracing the memory of that day. In a hamlet of a few dozen inhabitants, faithfulness to this memory is itself a small marvel.

Canosio and the Maira Valley: Faith among the Mountains

The parish church of Canosio, its stone bell tower rising among the mountain huts, is the spiritual centre of a valley that preserves frescoed chapels, sundials and an ancient Alpine religiosity. The Maira Valley, today renowned for its unspoilt hiking routes, offers pilgrims a setting of silence and beauty that makes the visit all the more intense.
