Discover the Eucharistic Miracle of Dronero: the Blessed Sacrament that Quenched the Fire

Dronero, gateway to the Maira Valley and famous for its Devil’s Bridge, preserves the memory of a prodigy that took place in the summer of 1631: an unstoppable fire devouring the town died out before the advance of the Blessed Sacrament carried in procession. A memorial stone in the little church of Santa Brigida still recounts that day to visitors.

3 August 1631: Fire and Wind

On Sunday 3 August 1631, around the hour of Vespers, a young peasant woman imprudently set fire to some dry straw just as the wind was rising with an approaching storm. Within moments the flames blazed up and, driven by the wind, spread violently until they reached the houses of Borgo Maira. The people tried every means to tame the blaze, but every effort proved vain: the fire grew ever more menacing.

The Procession of Father Maurizio da Ceva

It was then that the Capuchin Father Maurizio da Ceva was inspired to call upon the power of the Saviour veiled beneath the Eucharistic species. He immediately organised a solemn procession with the Blessed Sacrament and, followed by all the townspeople, made his way towards the site of the fire. As the Blessed Sacrament advanced, the fire miraculously stopped, as though held back by an invisible hand. The town was saved.

The Memory: Santa Brigida and the Feast of Corpus Christi

A stone tablet preserved in the little church of Santa Brigida in Dronero describes the miracle in detail. Every year, on the feast of Corpus Christi, the people of Dronero honour the memory of the prodigy with a solemn Eucharistic procession through the streets of the historic centre: almost four centuries of unbroken gratitude.

With its fourteenth-century Devil’s Bridge, arcaded streets and churches rich in art, Dronero is one of the most charming towns in the Cuneo area and the ideal starting point for exploring the Maira Valley — the same valley which, a few kilometres upstream and in the previous year, witnessed the Eucharistic miracle of Canosio.
