A Sanctuary Born from Divine Mercy
The origins of the Sanctuary date back to 1610. Tradition tells that Giovan Battista Mutto, moved by deep devotion, erected a votive shrine dedicated to the Madonna of Mercy. A simple gesture, but one that clashed with the authority of Baron Spinola of Montessoro, the feudal lord of the area, who had not granted permission for its construction. Legend has it that as the baron was about to tear down the shrine, his horse stumbled, causing him to fall to the ground. Interpreting this as a divine sign, Spinola changed his mind and allowed the chapel to be built, thus consecrating the site to Marian veneration.
From Chapel to Church: A Testament of Faith and Gratitude
The original shrine, which became a destination for pilgrimages and prayer, soon proved too small to accommodate the faithful. In 1843, the communities of Isola del Cantone and Vobbietta, grateful to the Virgin for protecting them from the cholera epidemic of 1835, decided to build the current single-nave church. This collective act of faith transformed the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Tuscia into a monumental ex-voto, a tangible sign of gratitude and popular devotion.

Treasures of Art and Devotion
Inside the Sanctuary, on the main altar, lies a remarkable statue of the Madonna of Mercy, dating back to the 15th-16th century. This sacred artwork represents the spiritual heart of the place, the focal point of Marian devotion for the faithful. In the past, on September 8th, during the feast of the Nativity of Mary, a wooden statue of the Holy Child Mary was also displayed on the altar, adding an extra touch of solemnity and beauty to the celebration.

Master Artist Luigi Costa adorned Italy and the Vatican with his sacred and civil stained-glass artworks in the early 1900s and was privately received by Pope Pius XI in 1927.
Pope Pius XI awarded Luigi Costa the Pro Ecclesiastica Pontificia Cross in 1925, the Cross of St. Sylvester Pope in 1931, and Pius XII transformed the latter into a commendation in 1954.
He created works for about a hundred churches and hundreds of secular pieces.
He specialized at the Brera Academy, winning gold medals and honor cups at major National and International Exhibitions.
